While visiting the Williamsburg area, don't miss out on touring one of the Historic plantations which are open to the public.  All are within a short distance from downtown Colonial Williamsburg.  Many of them feature special events, guided tours and activities year round.

Sherwood Forest Plantation

Twenty five miles west of Williamsburg is Sherwood Forest Plantation.  The home of President John Tyler, Sherwood Forest is still in the family.  Guided tours feature the formal rooms of the house.  The grounds, including the original plantation outbuildings, are accessible for a self guided tour.  Snacks and gifts are available in the gift shop.

 

 


Shirley Plantation

colonial williamsburg plantationsShirley Plantation offers an intimate view of the Hill-Carter family business spanning nearly four centuries. Shirley is the oldest Plantation in Virginia, settled in 1613 and is the oldest family owned business in North America.

Home to Robert E. Lee's mother, Shirley Plantation features the famous square three story flying stairway.  The home is beautifully furnished with family portraits, silver and furniture.   Situated on the James River, Shirley Plantation is a working farm with exquisite grounds and gardens.  

 


Berkeley Plantation

colonial williamsburg plantationsLocation of the first official Thanksgiving in America, Berkeley Plantation was the birthplace of Benjamin Harrison.  Built in 1726, Berkeley is furnished with rare antiques of the period.  Costumed guides conduct tours of the house daily.    Don't miss the terrace gardens overlooking the James River.   An audio visual program and museum exhibit area are also available.  Lunch at the Coach House Tavern.  Gift shop available.

 

 


Evelynton Plantation

Furnished throughout with 18th century English and American antiques, Evelynton Plantation is available for special events.  The original house was destroyed during the Civil War in 1862 and was rebuilt by famed architect Duncan Lee in the 1930's.    The Georgian Revival manor is surrounded by beautiful grounds and gardens.
